All dressed up and ready to go
The Spring Racing Carnival is 50 days of frocks, suits, hats and of course Fashions on the Field. Fashion has become its own colourful sport during the Spring Racing Carnival, with racegoers competing to make a good impression.
FASHIONS ON THE FIELDFashions on the field titles can be as hotly contested as the racing. Here's what lies ahead.
COUNTRY RACING
Each year nearly 30 country racing clubs host their own Fashions on the Field competition. This year for the first time there will be one overall Country Fashions on the Field winner. The winner from each country racing club Fashions on the Field will become a finalist to be crowned overall winner for 2007.
The good news is the general public will decide who takes home this honour by voting online for their favourite. The person with the most votes wins! Like any other competition there will be a grand prize for the winner along with a prize for random voters each week during the 50 day Carnival. So keep your eye on this website for more information.
FLEMINGTON
With a record $350,000 prize pool, including four business-class trips for two to Dubai, this year's Myer Fashions on the Field will again include interstate heats for the women's classic racewear section. LOOKING FOR LABELS
Where better to find a new outfit than in Melbourne, one of the world’s great fashion and shopping cities. Explore Melbourne’s historic arcades and laneways, where local designers have opened their doors. Head to Little Collins Street and Flinders Lane for great threads, jewellery, fancy footwear and accessories. For international labels, head to the ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street, the Southgate and Crown Entertainment Complex, Albert Coates Lane or GPO in Elizabeth Street. Find the latest floral accessories at your closest professional florist.
CONVENIENT SHOPPINGFor familiar labels go to Myer and at Chadstone Shopping Centre or Bourke Street in the CBD. GPO Melbourne has three levels of boutiques selling Australian and international designer labels, and at Melbourne Central you will find over 300 shops.
South of the CBD, Chapel Street is known for its hip fashion, and bargain hunters head to factory-outlet shops in Richmond.
FASHION FOR THE FELLASGeorgie Clegg from Henry Bucks knows a well-dressed man when she sees one;
“On Derby day many of the smarter male race goers will be wearing traditional morning suits. Others will choose to single-breasted suits in grey, taupe and natural colours in fine wools, cottons or linen, teamed with colourful, sometimes bold patterned shirts and beautiful, flamboyant silk ties. Shoes will generally be soft leather in tan, chestnut or black. This year you will see shirts in pale jade and aqua greens and blues and some lemon, as well as mint green. Men add colour with their accessories, including brilliantly coloured ties, waistcoats and cufflinks or a silk pocket handkerchief.”
Flowers aren't just for the ladies, finish off your suit with the official race day flower buttonholes.
