- Worth $3.05 million
- All expenses paid for invited runners
- Minimum $50,000 for any other international runner
- Weight-For-Age Championship of Australia
First run in 1922, the $3.05 million Weight-For-Age Ladbrokes Cox Plate is run over the quirky distance of 2040 metres (just over 10 furlongs) at The Valley (Moonee Valley Racecourse) and some of the greatest horses in the history of Australian racing adorn its honour roll.
Phar Lap, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze, Kingston Town, Better Loosen Up, Sunline, Makybe Diva, So You Think and the current highest rated horse on turf, Winx are among those to have won the race.
Masterful Irish horseman Aidan O'Brien broke the Internationals' drought in 2014, preparing four year-old stallion Adelaide to a stunning last-to-first victory with Ryan Moore on board. Adelaide was invited by Moonee Valley Racing Club therefore expenses for the horse and connections were met by the Club.
The 2016 W.S. Cox Plate was recognised as the equal-highest rated turf horse race in the world at the 2016 Longines World's Best Horse Race Awards . Last year's edition of the race was also rated the second-equal highest thoroughbred race in the world, which is the highest rating of any horse race ever recorded in Australia. Could the 2017 Ladbrokes Cox Plate reach that coveted number one spot?
An exclusive invitation will be extended to qualified runners by the Moonee Valley Racing Club to cover costs associated with transporting invited horses to Melbourne.
These invitations include travel and accommodation expenses for the connections of each horse.
International invitation selections are at the discretion of the Moonee Valley Racing Club Committee and invitations are issued mid-June.
Moonee Valley Racing Club offers $50,000 prizemoney for eligible runners that finish 9th - 14th. Details of this eligibility can be found on the prizemoney page.
