Flemington Racecourse is located six kilometres from the Melbourne city centre. The track was completely reconstructed in 2007 and boasts a circumference of 2312 metres with a home straight of 450 metres and just two turns. The start for the Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) is located on the straight 1200 metre track. It gives the maximum field of 24 a straight run of about 900 metres to take up a position before the first turn, which takes the field onto a 600 metre straight run to the 1300 metre point, from which a sweeping turn leads into the home straight again with about 450 metres to the winning post.
