Ah spring, that magical time of year where premier thoroughbred racing and high fashion collide. The pomp and tradition of Spring Racing Carnival is like no other and the perfect excuse for you and your best gal pals to get all dolled up and flaunt the latest spring trends trackside.
If you’re a newcomer to the scene or perhaps need a little refresher on the spring racing dress code, you’ve come to right place ladies. Find our top tips for Spring Carnival style below.
As highlighted earlier, Spring Carnival is all about tradition. This calls for beautiful tailoring, clean lines and ladylike sophistication. While there is no strict dress code in General Admission, it’s always fun to keep in with the spirit of the season, so steer clear of denim or anything that resembles evening wear.
Femininity is back this season with ruffles, florals and mesh overlays featuring strongly in spring style edits. For a fashion forward look opt for a one-shoulder dress in flattering crepe or jacquard fabric or on-trend midi skirt paired with a bodice top in an unusual pattern or cut. The power suit is also back with aplomb, so for a masculine spin on traditional race wear why not try out a beautifully tailored suit with a wide legged pant and killer heel.
Millinery is an essential part of your Spring Carnival look and the ultimate way to complete your race day outfit. The beauty of millinery is you can go as understated or over the top as you like. A simple frock paired with a big bold hat is classic sophistication while a busy, colourful outfit may be best finished off with a simple, elegant headband.
Popular looks this season include embellished headbands with flowing silk ribbons, metallic crowns and stylish boater hats in black mesh (artfully cocked to one side for that avant-garde touch of course!).
Best Foot Forward
Footwear is something that requires careful consideration come Spring Carnival. Have a good think about where you’ll be spending the most time on a race day. Sitting down? Standing on grass? Walking around?
For comfort and ease you can never go wrong with a block heel or sling back pump. Velvet, suede and classic patent leather are all failsafe options, or for some additional wow factor opt for an extra strappy sandal or something metallic.
If only the skinniest of high heels will do, make sure to invest in some Stiletto Stoppers - a nifty contraption that will prevent you from sinking into the grass. Handy!
Accessories? Of course!
If you’re heading to a number of race days across the season a clever way to put a fresh spin on a previously worn outfit is through the power of accessories. Big statement earrings continue to feature heavily this spring along with big buckle belts and necklaces and cuffs in classic gold.
Sunglasses are a must for those warm days and of course a cross-body bag to keep those hands free for champagne!
