Caulfield Cup Carnival - what to expect on and off the track

Caulfield Cup Carnival is just around the corner! Heralding the first marquee race of the season, over 55,00 guests are expected on course to experience a jam-packed three days of show-stopping racing, fashion and entertainment. Here’s a preview of what you can look forward to…

World Class Group Racing

The action at Caulfield Cup Carnival kicks off with Caulfield Guineas Day on Saturday 13 October, an event for the true racing purist. Featuring a stacked race card of four Group 1s, you can look forward to seeing star three-year-old gallopers including The Autumn Sun (Chris Waller) and Leonardo Da Hinchi (Darren Weir) in the headline $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas.

The celebrations continue midweek at Blue Sapphire Stakes Day on Wednesday, 17 October - the perfect excuse to take a day off work and embrace everything spring racing has to offer. The impressive Group 3 race card is highlighted by the $350,500 Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes with some of Australia’s best three-year-old sprinters in action.

Saving the best until last, the carnival comes to a close with the $5.15 million Group 1 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup on Saturday, 20 October – the world’s richest turf handicap over 2400m. This classic contest, now in its 141st year of running regularly attracts a global field since the first internationally trained horse - Taufan’s Melody won the race in 1998. Included amongst the acceptances in this year’s showdown are international raiders Best Solution (Saeed bin Suroor), Cliffs of Moher (Aidan O’Brien) and Chestnut Coast (Yoshito Yahagi). Joining Best Solution as ballot-exempt runners to accept are the Liam Howley-trained Homesman and Darren Weir’s highly fancied pair Kings Will Dream and Nights Watch. This is one you won’t want to miss!
